CANADA’S PROFESSIONAL LEAGUE

The Canadian Soccer League (CSL) is Canada’s only professional league and is a continuation of earlier leagues, the National Soccer League (NSL), the Canadian National Soccer League (CNSL) and the Canadian Professional Soccer League (CPSL), going back more than 80 years.

The CSL presently operates teams in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec and has adopted a mandate to expand on a regional basis to other parts of Canada.

The league is headed by a Commissioner, Cary Kaplan, with offices at The Soccer Centre in Vaughan and Mississauga, Ontario.

The CSL operates two divisions — a National Conference of teams in Windsor, St. Catharines, London, Brampton, Oakville, North York and Toronto and the Province of Quebec – and an International Division of teams in the Toronto area which represent their country of origin.

The CSL has a 22-game regular league schedule which runs from mid-May through to the end of September, followed by the playoffs which lead to the Championship Final late October. It also runs an Open Canada Cup from mid-May to Labour Day weekend in September, a competition open to all senior teams in Canada, amateur or pro, which is a first step in Canada’s attempt to run a total club championship.

Inaugural year team Trois-Rivieres Attak won the 2007 Open Canada Cup, defeating Columbus Clan of Vancouver, 3-0, in the final on September 3, 2007, and the current CSL champions are Toronto Croatia of the International Conference which defeated another International Conference team, Serbian White Eagles, in 2-leg final October 20/21, 2007

Perhaps one of the most important factors in influencing the decision to start any new sport is cost. Golf unlike some sports requires a plethora of golf equipment from the beginning including golf clubs, accessories, balls, shoes and suitable clothing – especially if you’re considering to take-up the sport in winter; put simply, golf equipment is a huge part of the game and entry costs such as lessons, membership and driving range fees can be equally so.

Before the dawn of online retailing the pro shop, franchised high street store and direct mail organisations held the monopoly on ‘expensive’ golf equipment. Ever increasing overheads were inherent to such retail outlets – with margins especially tight on top branded golf equipment – retailers were faced with two options; absorbing (to a point) all overheads or increasing their prices.

The Sports HQ

The FIFA World Cup, sometimes called the football World Cup or the soccer World Cup, but usually referred to simply as the World Cup, is an international football competition contested by the men’s national football teams of member nations of the Federation International de Football Association (FIFA), the sport’s global governing body. The championship has been awarded every four years since the first tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946. However, the event is often ongoing, as the qualifying rounds of the competition take place over the three years preceding the final rounds. The tournament’s final phase, often called the World Cup Finals, involves thirty-two national teams competing at several venues within the host nation over a period of about a month. It is the most widely-viewed sporting event in the world, with 1.1 billion people watching the 2002 tournament final.

In the eighteen tournaments held, only seven nations have won. Brazil is the most successful World Cup team, having won the tournament five times. The current Cup holder, Italy, follows with four titles, while Germany holds three. The other former champions are Uruguay and Argentina with two titles each, and England and France with one title each.

The Copa América is the oldest surviving international football competition in the world, as it was held for the first time between July 2 and July 17, 1916 as part of the commemorations of Argentina’s independence centenary. The CONMEBOL was then founded during this event, on July 9 (Argentina’s independence day). It is normally held every two years, but the intervals may change.
