How to Chip a Soccer Ball

Posted under soccer stats

How to chip a soccer ball is this week’s Online Soccer Academy soccer training video. Chipping a soccer ball is a soccer kick that is great passing technique and it can even be used for shooting!

Description:
The chip in soccer can be used as a pass or shot. Mainly it’s for passing. You want to use a chip pass when you want to lob it in to your teammate over a defender that’s in between you and your teammate. It’s easier for a teammate to receive this type of pass then you crushing it at them!

Key Points:
1. Strike underneath ball / Turn foot out using laces
2. Lean Back
3. Follow through low, not high

Equipment Needed: Ball, cones and a trash can

Exercise Player Can Do:
Set a target up like a trash can about 30 yards away from you. Place some cones between you and the target. Then practice chipping balls at the trash can. Don’t rush; this is technique work, not fitness.

What Player Could Be Doing Wrong:
If the ball isn’t getting high enough for you make sure you are not kicking down on it. Keep your swing low from start to finish so you can get under the ball.

If the ball isn’t going straight for you make sure your shoulders are facing your target when you finish your chip. Also don’t have your foot moving after you hit the ball. So keep your foot turned out. Think of a golf club. Does the bottom of the golf club move during the swing?

Bonus Tip:
The chip pass is great for those over the top through balls. For example if the field is hard and it’s windy and you hit a straight driven through ball it may run out of bounds or end up in the goalie’s hands. If you hit a chip with backspin it will slow the ball down when it hits the ground and allow your teammate to get on the end of it.

When practicing place the ball on a nice piece of grass so the ball sits up high, don’t place it low in the grass.

Yes, very useful for a defender to be able to chip the ball. You need to get height on the ball usually when you clear the ball out of the back or pass it to a forward and you need to clear the midfield line.

Is there any technique we should put when swinging our leg back? Like, should we swing hard when going for the ball, or just a bit relaxed (with a locked ankle of course)? I ask this because your chips seem to go slow, but they go far and get quite a bit of distance on them, and it looks like you didn’t put any effort into the kick lol. Thanks for the tutorial!
