Denizli joins Persepolis as new coach
Turkish football coach Mustafa Denizli has agreed to return to the green fields for the last time and steer the Persepolis football team after poor results forced former coach Hamid Estili to quit.
The 62-year-old Turk confirmed on a Turkish sports television show on Friday night that he is set to travel to Iran and join Persepolis on an 18-month contract.
Denizli – who has managed notable Turkish football clubs Fenerbahce, Galatasaray and Besiktas, and has won the Turkish League title five times – worked with Persepolis in the 2006-07 season of Iran’s Premier League.
Persepolis had initially entered talks with Bayer Leverkusen coach Klaus Toppmoller, Swede Sven-Goran Eriksson, Italian Roberto Donadoni and 56-year-old Croat Luka Bonacic to become the new coach of Tehran-based football team. They all turned down the offer.
Estili, a forty four-year-old Iranian coach, took the decision to leave Persepolis after arch-rival Esteghlal football team trounced the Reds 3-0 at a derby in front of approximately 70,000 spectators at Tehran’s Azadi Stadium on Friday December 9.
Estili was appointed as Persepolis head coach at the beginning of Iran’s current football premier league season after the world’s all-time leading goal scorer Ali Daei refused to cooperate with the squad.
